A huge benefit of slate is that it doesn’t fade over time, some signs of oxidation may occur, causing ever so slight colour changes (this is due to iron content within the stone), but it will retain its beautiful colour for years to come. Some occasional Iron Pyrite (Fool’s Gold) deposits may occasionally be present – showing as golden coloured deposits on the surface of the stone. Scratches – like any form of natural paving, slate can be physically scratched and some scratches may be present on its arrival due to the packaging and shipping process. But not to worry. When slate is scratched, this will present as leaving a white, chalky mark, within no time at all this will subside and the scratch will fade. It often simply needs a scrub with water and a cloth, at worst a little time to weather. During the warmer months your Brazilian slate will absorb heat and in extreme temperatures may get hot under bare foot, this would be the for nearly all paving materials of a similar colour. During the winter, its non porous nature means that this excellent material will resist frost and will not freeze. Whilst Brazilian slate doesn’t have the same texture as riven sandstones or limestones, it does meet or exceed the minimum requirements for slip resistance in the UK. Sealing your slate with a good quality penetrative sealer will help greatly in your cleaning schedule, improve anti-slip properties and help keep its good looks.
