Important Dieppe Mammoth ivory carving. c. 1790 – 1810. This remarkable carving was made from a large, single piece of Mammoth tusk in Dieppe between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. It shows the parable of the Five Foolish Virgins (Matthew 25 1 – 13). Dieppe was a centre for the production of exceptional and exquisite ivory carvings, but comparatively few are known to exist in Mammoth ivory. It is likely that this was a devotional object and would have rested either in a Church or private Chapel. The cuts in the reverse of the carving suggest wall mounting, though it also stands independently. The particular way that the Mammoth ivory has crazed, shown particularly on the top of the heads and also the distinct colour prove this to be Mammoth and not elephant ivory. For further details please see the CITES definitions outlined on their site. This fine and rare work of Art stands 16cm high and is 11cm at its widest point. (Measurements approximate). It is in fine condition, bearing only the wear appropriate to its age and substance. It has no damage and no restoration.
