Porsche redesigned the scavenge return lines on the 996 and 997.1 Turbo for an anti-drain back, aka “P Trap” type. This keeps the oil from the crankcase from backing up into the turbos, then the seals, then out into the exhaust creating the smoke on startup issue. These oil lines prevent oil from flowing back to the turbocharger, which leads to excessive oil burning and smoking during startup or after a long idle time. Who uses these? Can a Turbo cause Smoke on Startup and How do I fix blue smoke from my exhaust on startup? There can be many causes for smoke on startup.
